Breitling Serial Number Checker

A Breitling caseback carries a reference and a serial, and the reference is the one that actually reads. Its first letter is the case material — A steel, E titanium, K yellow gold, J white gold, H rose gold, with B and D for older two-tone and M, R and U added after 2009 for black steel, red gold and steel-and-red-gold. The code that follows is the calibre family: 13 for the Valjoux 7750-based chronograph, 17 for the ETA 2824-based automatic, B01 for the in-house chronograph that arrived in 2009, B20 for the in-house automatic. So A13356 is a steel Calibre 13 chronograph and AB0121 a steel B01.

The serial is a separate number, six to eight characters, unique to the watch — and Breitling publishes no table that turns it into a year. It identifies the piece for the brand's records, its warranty and, for watches sold since October 2020, a blockchain digital passport. Only pre-1980 numeric serials are placed at all, roughly, by collector charts. This checker decodes the reference, recognises the serial, and stops where the published record stops.

How to read it

Type the reference (A13356, AB0121, or the long modern form such as A17375211C1A1) or the serial on its own. The checker names the case material and calibre from a reference and flags a serial as identification — and tells you when a calibre code is outside the ones it maps rather than guessing.

MarkingWhat it gives
A13356 (letter + 5 digits)older reference — material letter + calibre 13/17/10 + model digits
AB0121 (letter + B01/B20 + 2 digits)post-2009 reference — material letter + in-house calibre
A17375211C1A1 (long form)same reference with dial and strap codes appended
6–8 letters/digits, or 7 digitscase serial — identification, no published date

Where to find it on the item

Both are engraved on the caseback, the reference usually on one line and the serial on another; some models put the serial between the lugs or on the caseback edge. The warranty card and, since October 2020, the digital passport quote the same serial — all three should agree. The chronometer certificate on COSC-certified pieces (all Breitling movements since 2000) also carries the movement number.

Worked examples

Reading A13356

A13356

A is steel, 13 the Valjoux 7750-based chronograph calibre — a steel Chronomat or Navitimer reference of the 1990s–2000s. This is the model reference; the serial is the other number on the caseback.

Reading AB0121

AB0121

Steel case, Calibre B01 — Breitling's in-house chronograph, so 2009 or later. The reference gives the movement family; only the papers give the year.

Reading 2645937

2645937

Seven digits: a modern case serial. It identifies the watch for Breitling's records and does not encode a year — no tool can read one from it.

Breitling serial number questions

Can I check a Breitling serial number online?

Not against Breitling's records from a web form — the brand confirms a serial through an authorised retailer or service centre, and watches sold since October 2020 carry a blockchain digital passport tied to the serial. This checker reads the format and decodes the reference.

Does the serial give the year?

No. Breitling publishes no serial-to-year table for modern production. The reference's run years, the warranty date and service records date the watch; pre-1980 numeric serials are placed only roughly by collector charts.

What does the letter at the start of the reference mean?

The case material: A steel, E titanium, K yellow gold, J white gold, H rose gold, L platinum; B and D two-tone on older references; M black steel, R red gold and U steel-and-red-gold on post-2009 ones. A gold-letter reference on a steel-looking watch is a mismatch worth questioning.

What is the difference between Calibre 13 and B01?

Calibre 13 is Breitling's chronometer-grade version of the Valjoux 7750, used for decades; B01 is the in-house chronograph movement launched in 2009. A B01 reference therefore cannot predate 2009 — a useful sanity check against a seller's claimed age.

Does a valid serial prove the watch is genuine?

No — counterfeiters engrave well-formed references and serials. Case finishing, the rider tabs on a Chronomat bezel, the movement through the caseback where there is one, weight and dial printing decide; the digital passport, where the watch has one, is the strongest paper check.

Does the calibre move the value?

Yes — B01 references hold value above Calibre 13 equivalents, and precious-metal letters move it further. Condition, box and papers do the rest; the live pieces below show current UAE asking prices.
