Burberry numbers work differently from most luxury houses: the 8-digit article number on a modern care label (80528421 — many start with 80) identifies the style and colourway, not your individual item, and no Burberry number has ever encoded a production date. What genuinely dates a Burberry is the label itself — the house has renamed and re-logoed itself on the record: “Burberrys” until 1999, “Burberry London” with the knight until 2017, all-caps “BURBERRY LONDON ENGLAND” from 2018, and the knight back with a serif logo from 2023.

Where to find it on the item
Bags: a leather tab inside the main zip pocket, with the code stamped directly into the leather — never a stuck-on label — or a metal plaque. Trench coats: inside the storm-flap pocket beside the care instructions. Clothing: the reverse of the care label at the inner back collar. Watches: the caseback; sunglasses: inside a temple arm. Checking a Burberry coat, trench or polo — where the labels are
Everything this checker reads applies to clothing exactly as it does to bags. A garment carries two labels that matter: the woven neck label, whose branding wording dates the piece across the same four eras the checker uses, and the care or content label stitched into an interior seam, which carries the article number. Garment care labels add one reading bags don’t have: many carry a season code such as 22L or 23A, and the two digits read directly as the year — 22 is 2022, 23 is 2023. Burberry publishes nothing about the trailing letter, so this checker doesn’t invent a meaning for it.
Burberry tags, real vs fake: what the label era can catch
A tag on its own proves little — counterfeiters copy tags — but era consistency catches real fakes. “Burberrys of London” on a piece sold as recent is a mismatch: the s was dropped in 1999. The Equestrian Knight on a piece from 2018 to early 2023 is a mismatch: the knight left the logo in 2018 and returned in February 2023. Does “Made in…” tell you anything?
Less than most buyers assume. Burberry’s heritage trench coats are made in Castleford, England, and that British origin is part of the product — but many other genuine Burberry categories are produced outside Britain, and always have been. A made-in label naming another country is not by itself evidence of a fake; a “Made in England” label on a category Burberry never made there is the more suspicious signal.
