Cartier Serial Number Checker
For most of the 1970s through 2008, a Cartier watch serial carries its year in plain sight: either two letters followed by the year digits (AB94512 → 1994), or the year digits leading a numeric serial (9412345 → 1994). Six-digit serials belong to the 1970s–early 1980s and date by the watch rather than the number, and from about 2009 Cartier randomised serials entirely.

View AllHow to read it
Read the two digits after the letters (or the two leading digits of a numeric serial) as the year. Digits + two trailing letters is the modern randomised layout — no date is encoded there.
| Shape | Era | Reads |
|---|---|---|
| Two letters + year digits + serial (AB94512) | 1980s – 2008 | the two digits after the letters are the year |
| Year digits + serial (9412345) | 1970s – 2008 | the two leading digits are the year |
| Six digits (941234) | 1970s – early 1980s | dated by the watch, not the number |
| Digits + two letters (132798BX) | ~2009 onward | randomised — no date encoded |
Where to find it on the item
Engraved on the caseback, together with the four-digit reference. On jewellery (Love bracelets, rings) the serial sits beside the hallmark and metal stamp — jewellery serials identify but do not date.

Cartier serial number questions
Where are the serial and reference on a Cartier watch?
Both engraved on the caseback: the four-digit reference names the model, the serial identifies the piece — and on pre-2009 watches also dates it.
Can a modern Cartier serial be dated?
No — from about 2009 the serial is random. Date modern pieces by the certificate and reference; a tool returning a year for one is inventing it.
Do Love bracelets carry a date in the serial?
No — jewellery serials identify the piece and pair it with its certificate. The hallmark, screws and engraving quality authenticate; the number itself holds no year.
Does a valid serial prove authenticity?
No — engraving depth and evenness, hallmark quality and the serial-to-certificate match carry the weight. Fakes engrave plausible numbers shallowly.
The serial doesn't match the certificate — what does that mean?
Wrong papers or a fake. Either way, treat the certificate as belonging to another piece until a professional says otherwise.
Does the year affect the value?
Less than model and condition do — though early runs of collectible references carry premiums. The live Cartier pieces below show current UAE asking prices.
