MCM Serial Number Checker
MCM stamps its serial on the brass logo plate riveted to the bag — the plate with the laurel wreath, nine leaves on the left and eight on the right, and “MCM MÜNCHEN” beneath. Older pieces carry four digits; newer ones a letter followed by four digits. The same number is printed on the interior fabric tag, which since 2005 also carries the logo and country of origin, and on the authenticity card that ships with the bag. Three places, one number: when they disagree, something was swapped.
What the number does not do is date the bag. MCM publishes no serial-to-year reading, so no honest tool returns a year from an MCM plate. The era comes from the plate and tag design instead — the wreath detail, the lettering, whether the tag carries the origin line — and from the Visetos monogram print itself. This checker validates the number's format, tells you what to match it against, and stops there.

View AllHow to read it
Type the number exactly as stamped on the brass plate. The checker tells you whether it fits the older four-digit or newer letter-plus-four format, reminds you where the same number must appear, and — if you typed a style code from the tag instead — treats it as a lookup for the model.
| Marking | What it gives |
|---|---|
| 4 digits on the brass plate | older plate serial — identification, must match the tag |
| Letter + 4 digits on the brass plate | newer plate serial — identification, must match tag and card |
| Long M… code on the tag (MWS8SVI29CO001) | style code — model, size and colourway lookup |
| Any of the above | no date — MCM publishes no serial-to-year reading |
Where to find it on the item
The brass plate sits on the front of the bag or inside the main compartment, riveted, with the serial engraved beneath the wreath. The fabric tag is stitched into an interior seam or pocket and repeats the number, with the logo and “Made in …” line on pieces from 2005 onward. The authenticity card, when the bag still has one, quotes the same number. Backpacks (the Stark) carry the plate on the front flap; small leather goods stamp the number inside.
What each MCM marking gives
| Marking | Gives / doesn't give |
|---|---|
| Brass-plate serial | the piece's identifier — matches the tag and card; no date |
| Plate design (9 + 8 laurel leaves, MÜNCHEN) | an era and authenticity tell — miscounted leaves or wrong lettering are classic fakes |
| Interior tag with logo + origin | 2005 onward; earlier tags carry the number only |
| Authenticity card | repeats the serial — absence is common on pre-owned pieces, mismatch is not |
Worked examples
Reading A1234
Letter plus four digits: the newer plate format. Check that the interior tag and the authenticity card show the same number — that match is the check MCM gives you; the number itself carries no year.
Reading 1234
Four digits alone: the older plate format, usual on vintage Visetos pieces. The plate and tag design date those, not the number.
Reading MWS8SVI29CO001
A style code from the tag, not the serial: it names the model, size and colourway and is shared by every bag of that style. Search it — a genuine code resolves to the exact bag you are holding.
MCM serial number questions
How do I check an MCM serial number?
Read it off the brass plate and confirm the same number on the interior tag and the authenticity card. MCM keeps no public lookup, so that three-way match — plus the plate's wreath and lettering — is the check. This page validates the format and tells you what to compare.
Does the MCM serial tell me the year?
No — MCM publishes no serial-to-year reading, and the number is an identifier, not a date. The plate and tag design, and the print, place the era; any tool that returns a year from the digits is inventing it.
The plate number and the tag number differ
On a genuine bag they are the same number. A mismatch means a plate or tag was replaced, or the bag is counterfeit — treat it as failing until an authenticator says otherwise.
No authenticity card — is that a problem?
Not by itself: cards are lost, and pre-owned pieces often arrive without one. A card whose number differs from the plate is the problem — that card belongs to another bag.
What should the brass plate look like?
A laurel wreath with nine leaves on the left and eight on the right, “MCM” inside, “MÜNCHEN” beneath (Munich, where the house was founded in 1976), clean engraving, riveted rather than glued. Miscounted leaves, blurred lettering or a glued plate are the classic tells — with the serial matching the tag being the next check.
Does age move an MCM's value?
Vintage Visetos pieces from the Munich era carry their own collector demand, and current Stark backpacks and Aren totes hold retail relevance. Condition of the coated canvas and hardware decides — the live pieces below show current UAE asking prices.
