Panerai Serial Number Checker

Since 1998 Panerai has dated its watches with a single caseback letter — the millesimation — running A (1998) through the alphabet to 2023, alongside the piece's number in its limited run (T095/500 = piece 95 of 500, year letter T). The caseback also carries a BB case serial and an OP number, and the PAM reference names the model — none of those three encode a date, and this checker identifies each rather than misreading them.

How to read it

Find the letter that starts the edition line (T095/500 → T) and read it from the table. I and O are used in the sequence — Panerai did not skip them.

MarkingMeaning

OP + digitsinternal case number — no date
PAM + digitsthe model reference, not a serial

Where to find it on the item

All engraved on the caseback. Genuine Panerai engraving is deep and even; the millesimation letter and edition number should agree with the paperwork.

Worked examples

Reading T095/500

T095/500

Letter T from the table → 2017; the watch is piece 95 of a 500-piece run.

Reading BB1234567

BB1234567

A BB case serial: identification only — the year comes from the letter, not from this.

Reading PAM00312

PAM00312

A PAM reference names the model (here a Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days). It is printed on thousands of watches — never a serial.

Panerai serial number questions

Which caseback marking carries the year?

Only the millesimation letter that starts the edition line. BB, OP and PAM markings identify the case and model — no date lives in them.

Is PAM00312 my watch's serial number?

No — the PAM reference is the model name, shared by every watch of that model. The serial is the BB number plus the edition line.

What happened after 2023?

The published letter sequence ends there; later pieces date by paperwork and reference. The checker won't extrapolate letters beyond the verified table.

Does the edition number (095/500) matter?

It confirms a limited run and must match the paperwork. Low numbers carry collector appeal, but condition rules the price.

Does a correct letter prove the watch is genuine?

No — fakes engrave plausible casebacks. Engraving depth, dial lume and movement finishing decide; the letter only has to be consistent with the model's run years.

Does the year letter move the value?

Early letters (pre-Vendôme and first Richemont years) carry collector premiums. The live Panerai pieces below show current UAE asking prices.
