How to read it
The serial sits between the lugs at 6 o'clock (bracelet off) and, from the mid-2000s, on the inner bezel (rehaut). A purely numeric serial can fall in both the early and the modern sequential runs — where it does, the checker shows both windows labelled rather than picking one silently.

Is there a Rolex serial number lookup?
Not a public one. Rolex holds its production records internally and does not publish a lookup, so no website can tell you the history of a specific watch from its serial alone. What is well established outside the brand is the approximate mapping of serial ranges to production years, and that is what the reader above applies — an estimated year, not a record.
Treat any site offering to confirm ownership, service history or authenticity from a serial number with real suspicion. That information exists only with Rolex and its authorised service network, and it is not exposed to the public. A serial gives you an era and nothing more.
Where the serial is engraved
On watches from roughly 2005 onward the serial is engraved into the rehaut — the inner bezel ring between the dial and the crystal — usually at the six o'clock position, and it should be crisply cut and precisely aligned with the hour markers. On earlier watches it sits between the lugs at six o'clock, which means removing the bracelet to read it, and on those the engraving should be fine and even rather than acid-etched or shallow.
Engraving quality is worth more than the number itself. Rolex's rehaut engraving is exact, evenly spaced and consistently deep; counterfeits frequently get the alignment or the character spacing subtly wrong even when the digits are plausible.
A serial is not an authentication
A correctly formed serial in the right range tells you the number is consistent with a production era. It does not tell you the watch is genuine, and it cannot: serials are engraved on counterfeits too, and the better ones use ranges that decode perfectly.
Where the reading earns its place is contradiction — a serial dating to a period before the reference existed, or a rehaut engraving on a watch old enough that it should have none. Past that, a Rolex is judged on the movement, the dial printing under magnification, the case finishing and the bracelet, and that is work for a watchmaker with the watch open, not for a number.

Why do I get two windows for one number?
Early and modern sequential runs overlap in places. Where a number is valid in both, the checker shows both labelled — the watch's model and construction pick the right one.
Does a valid serial prove the watch is genuine?
No — engraving quality matters more than the digits: genuine rehaut engraving is crisp, perfectly aligned to the dial, and the serial matches the paperwork.
The serial and the warranty card differ — what now?
On a genuine set they always match. A mismatch means wrong papers or a fake — either way the premium that 'full set' commands is gone until proven otherwise.
