Rolex Serial Number Checker
Rolex serials come in three generations. Until 1987 they ran sequentially, so a number places the watch in a production window. From 1987 to 2010 a letter prefix names the era directly. From 2011 the serial is randomised — eight mixed characters that deliberately encode nothing, so a modern Rolex dates by its warranty card and reference, never by the serial.

How to read it
The serial sits between the lugs at 6 o'clock (bracelet off) and, from the mid-2000s, on the inner bezel (rehaut). A purely numeric serial can fall in both the early and the modern sequential runs — where it does, the checker shows both windows labelled rather than picking one silently.

Where to find it on the item
Between the lugs at 6 o'clock, behind the bracelet end-link; engraved on the rehaut from the mid-2000s. A serial engraved anywhere else — casebacks especially — is a red flag on a Rolex.

Rolex serial number questions
Where is the serial on a Rolex?
Between the lugs at 6 o'clock (remove the bracelet end-link to see it) and, from the mid-2000s, engraved on the rehaut inside the crystal.
Can a post-2011 Rolex serial be dated?
No — randomisation is the point. Any tool returning a year for an 8-character mixed serial is guessing. Date those by warranty card, reference and dial details.
Why do I get two windows for one number?
Early and modern sequential runs overlap in places. Where a number is valid in both, the checker shows both labelled — the watch's model and construction pick the right one.
Does a valid serial prove the watch is genuine?
No — engraving quality matters more than the digits: genuine rehaut engraving is crisp, perfectly aligned to the dial, and the serial matches the paperwork.
The serial and the warranty card differ — what now?
On a genuine set they always match. A mismatch means wrong papers or a fake — either way the premium that 'full set' commands is gone until proven otherwise.
Does the production year move the price?
