The so-called ‘Princess of Polka Dots’ recounts having a terrifying hallucination as a young child in her memoir. She was in a field of flowers when they began talking to her! The flower heads resembled dots that continued as far as the eye could see, and the Japanese artist felt as though she was ‘self-obliterating’ into this field of never-ending dots. Ever since, she’s drawn inspiration from this strange experience to spark all of her artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and notably fashion. Her Infinity Rooms are vibrant sensations, alluring hours-long queues of people who were eager to snap them for the gram!

Let’s travel back to the outset, 2012! Marc Jacobs, who served as the house’s artistic director from 1997 to 2014, paid a visit to Kusama’s studio in Japan for the first time in 2006 after years of appreciating her work. As per Jacobs, she thrived in sharing her vision of the world with the French label. Yayoi Kusama brought forth “obsession and seriality” as the get-go for the collaboration. Finally, the Dots Infinity Collection saw the light! Louis Vuitton devotees may recall the signature motif on a variety of LV bag styles, including the Keepall, Neverfull, Papillion, and LV Speedy. The team-up’s collection was so distinguished by its state-of-the-art design that it became the heartthrob of masses and A-listers.

This unconventional Kusama-Polka-Dot spin on the pieces went through an artisanal process; Louis Vuitton’s craftspeople created a special method to make some of the 3D paint daubs look “wet,” as if they had just been painted by Kusama’s hand, which uplifted their appeal. Then Kusama’s faux-wet paint daubs appearing on both men’s and women’s clothing, bags, shoes, jewellery, eyewear, and accessories grew as eye-popping hits. In particular, the collection saw the light on January 1 in China and Japan before making its way to Louis Vuitton locations globally on January 6.

The artwork collection is covering some of the Nicolas Ghesquière-designed apparel and bags and layering on textured daubs of paint on both full-color and monochrome surfaces, occasionally referencing Kusama’s signature pumpkins and also inspired by Kusama’s stamp “Infinity Mirror Rooms”- immersively Instagrammable art destinations that layer metallic orbs, lights, and sculptures across mirrored floors and walls.

What’s in the drops? More like what’s not? With at least 100 items already revealed, the collection is striking big time, comprising up to 400 individual pieces. There’s the LV Duffle bag that is adorned with canvas and monochromatic paint splatters, the Louis Vuitton Square Bag is decorated with full-color paint and canvas bearing the monogram, and a tote bag made of pure white leather features a tonal rendition of Kusama’s favorite flowers.
