Quick answer: Hermès names its bags after people (Birkin, Kelly, Constance, Evelyne), equestrian objects (Picotin, Bolide, Herbag, Trim), places (Bora Bora, Deauville, Cannes) and plain French words (Fourre-Tout, Double Sens, Verrou, Roulis). The full name on a listing stacks the leather, the model, the construction and the size, so Togo Birkin Retourne 35 means a 35 cm Birkin in soft Togo leather with the stitching turned inside. On Libas Collective we have listed 3,705 Hermès bags since 2021 and 589 are live today; the Birkin and Kelly together make up one in four of them, the median asking price across every model is AED 10,505, and the median listing asks 66% of the original retail price. Every model Hermès sells today, and most of the ones it has retired, is explained below.
How to read a Hermès bag name
A Hermès listing reads like a formula. Take the most common name in our data, Togo Birkin Retourne 35: the first word is the leather (Togo, a grained calfskin), the second is the model, the third is the construction (Retourne, stitched inside-out for a soft shape; Sellier, stitched on the outside for a crisp one) and the number is the width of the base in centimetres. Colour, hardware (gold, palladium, rose gold, ruthenium) and the blind stamp that dates the bag come after. Once you can read the formula, "Clémence Picotin Lock 18" or "Epsom Constance 24" stops being code.
The data in this guide comes from our own catalogue: 7,006 Hermès listings on Libas Collective, of which 3,705 are bags, clutches, pouches and backpacks. Prices are the buyer-facing asking price in AED, including the buyer service fee, converted at today's live rate. Where we quote "retail retention" it is the median asking price divided by the bag's original retail price, computed on the 1,605 listings that carry a retail figure. These are asking prices, not sale prices, and they move with stock.

The A–Z of Hermès bag names
24/24
Launched in 2018 as the bag for "24 hours a day", the 24/24 has a flap that can be worn open or closed, a wide top handle and a shoulder strap, in 21, 29 and 35 cm. It is one of the newest names in the range and one of the rarest on the resale market: 6 listed on Libas Collective, 2 live, median asking price AED 25,518.
Aline
A soft, unlined crossbody with a wide woven strap, the Aline (a play on "à la ligne", "on the line") comes in mini, PM and GM and in Swift leather or Toile canvas. It is the cheapest way into a leather Hermès with a strap: 24 listed, 7 live, median AED 4,954, and it holds 79% of retail, which is high for an entry model.
Berline
Named after the four-wheeled carriage, the Berline is a structured crossbody with a flap and a riveted strap, in mini and 28 cm, mostly in Swift or Toile with leather trim. 16 listed, 5 live, median AED 13,797; retention 75%.
Birkin
The most famous bag name in the world started on an Air France flight in 1984 when Jane Birkin's straw basket spilled next to Jean-Louis Dumas. The Birkin has two rolled handles, a flap with two straps, a turnlock, a padlock, keys and a clochette, and no shoulder strap. Sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm; Retourne is the soft version, Sellier the crisp one. Variants carry their own names: the Birkin Cargo (canvas with exterior pockets, 11 listed), the Birkin Shadow (Jean Paul Gaultier's trompe-l'œil version), the Birkin Ghillies (perforated lace-up trim), the Birkin Touch (exotic skin on the handles and flap) and the Himalaya, the niloticus crocodile Birkin graded to look like the mountain range.
It is also the most listed Hermès bag on Libas Collective: 526 Birkins since 2021, 78 live today. Togo accounts for 278 of them, then Clémence (91) and Epsom (84). The 35 is the dominant size with 305 listings; the 25 is the rarest with 42. The size ladder runs the opposite way to the price list: median asking price is AED 81,004 for a 25, 63,365 for a 30, 47,879 for a 35 and 49,730 for a 40. Across all sizes the Birkin holds 73% of its retail price, from a floor of AED 27,914 to a ceiling of AED 150,174. Browse pre-owned Hermès Birkins.
Bolide
Designed in 1923 by Émile-Maurice Hermès for his wife, the Bolide is credited as the first handbag with a zip, which Hermès had seen on car hoods in North America (a "bolide" is a racing car). The rounded dome, two handles and detachable strap come in 27, 31, 35 and 45 cm, plus the Bolide 1923 reissue with its slimmer profile and the Mini Bolide 1923 25. 66 listed, 13 live, median AED 13,218; the 31 is the most common size on our site (10 listed, median AED 14,567).
Bora Bora
A canvas tote in two sizes named after the island, one of a run of Toile beach bags that includes the Cannes, the Deauville and the Escale à la Plage. These are the lowest-priced names in the Hermès catalogue: Bora Bora 7 listed, median AED 1,511; Cannes 6 listed, AED 1,904; Deauville 2 listed, AED 1,507.
Bride-à-Brac
Not a handbag but worth knowing because it appears so often: the Bride-à-Brac is a zipped case in Toile canvas, named after the "bride", the bridle, which the original 1950s version was designed to hold. It comes in small, medium and large, and it is the sixth most listed Hermès name on Libas Collective (216 listed, 35 live, median AED 3,722).
Cabag, Cabas and Cabasellier
Three names from "cabas", the French word for a shopping basket. The Cabag is a reversible Toile tote (5 listed, median AED 3,080); the Cabas family covers several canvas and leather totes (31 listed, median AED 3,813); the Cabasellier, introduced in 2021, is the leather version with Sellier stitching in Clémence (4 listed, median AED 11,510, all sold).
Cinhetic
A structured box bag with a sliding "H" clasp, launched in 2019, in Chèvre or Box leather. Rare in the UAE pre-owned market: 2 listed, median AED 6,683.
Constance
Catherine Chaillet designed this flap bag in 1959 and named it after her daughter, born the day the bag went into production. The large "H" clasp is the signature; the strap doubles so it works on the shoulder or across the body. Sizes are 14 (Micro), 18 (often called the Mini) and 24, with the Constance Élan as a longer east-west version and the Constance Slim, Constance Long and Constance To Go as wallets. 48 Constance bags listed, 6 live, median asking price AED 40,924, and it holds 79% of retail, the highest of the major models in our data. The 18 (23 listed) is the common size and asks a median of AED 40,077; the 24 (7 listed) asks AED 36,363. Epsom is the leather on 21 of 48. Browse pre-owned Hermès Constance bags.
Della Cavalleria
"Of the cavalry": a small flap bag from 2020 whose clasp is a stirrup-shaped loop drawn from the house's equestrian archive, in Epsom leather and a mini size. 10 listed, 1 live, median AED 21,185; it holds 92% of retail on the four listings with a retail price.
Double Sens
A reversible, unlined Clémence tote (the name means "two directions") that shows one colour outside and another when turned inside out. 36 and 45 cm. 44 listed, 3 live, median AED 7,390, retention 55%.
Drag
A 1960s top-handle bag with a flap and a Sellier finish, revived occasionally in Box leather. 2 listed, 1 live, median AED 9,492.
Égée
A slim clutch with an "H" on the flap, named after the Aegean Sea. 6 listed, all sold, median AED 8,576.
Evelyne
Evelyne Bertrand ran the Hermès riding department, and the bag that carries her name was designed in 1978 to hold grooming tools: the perforated "H" on the front was for ventilation, and it was meant to face the body. Today it is worn with the H outward on a canvas strap. Sizes are TPM 16, PM 29, GM 33 and TGM 40; generations run I, II and III (the III added a back pocket); the Evelyne Sellier is the structured version. On Libas Collective it is the model that sells most consistently after the Birkin and Kelly: 330 listed, 77 live, 269 of them in Clémence. The 16 is the most common (160 listed, median AED 12,182), then the 29 (68, AED 10,490) and the 33 (36, AED 9,793). The family holds 72% of retail.
Fourre-Tout
"Carry-all": a canvas tote in PM and MM that Hermès has sold in many colourways. It is the largest group of canvas pieces in our data and the cheapest Hermès bag name you can buy: 136 listed, 14 live, median AED 1,228, floor AED 440.
Garden Party and Garden File
The Garden Party is an open tote with a flat base, two handles and a snap-closed top, in Toile canvas with Negonda leather trim or in full leather, in 30, 36 and 49 cm. 152 listed, 25 live, median AED 8,292 (36 cm: 92 listed, AED 7,254; 30 cm: 32 listed, AED 9,351; 49 cm: 6 listed, AED 8,577). The Garden File is the zipped, flatter cousin (8 listed, median AED 5,724).
Geta
A 2021 crossbody whose curved base echoes the Japanese wooden sandal it is named after, with a slide-through strap closure. 7 listed, 1 live, median AED 22,814, and 97% retention on the three priced listings.
Halzan
Named after the Berber horse breed and launched in 2015, the Halzan converts between a tote, a shoulder bag and a crossbody by rethreading its strap through four rings. 25 and 31 cm. 7 listed, 2 live, median AED 18,222; retention 85%.
Haut à Courroies
The ancestor of the whole family. The HAC was created in 1892 to carry a saddle and bridle, which is why it is taller than a Birkin and has longer straps ("high straps"). Sizes run from 32 to 50 cm, and the 40 and 50 are travel bags. 12 listed on Libas Collective, all sold, median AED 50,468, 79% retention.
Herbag
Introduced in 1998 and relaunched as the Herbag Zip in 2009, this is the canvas Kelly: a Toile body with a Vache Hunter leather flap and the same clasp-and-strap geometry, sold with an interchangeable second body in the original version. Sizes are 31 and 39, and the Herbag Zip Cabine is the travel size. It is the third most listed Hermès bag on our site, 390 listed and 78 live, with the 31 taking 262 of them (median AED 7,983) and the 39 the rest (median AED 7,541). Because it is canvas it holds less of its retail price than the leather models: 56%.
Herline
A canvas carry-all in PM and MM, plus a pochette, sold in the 2000s. 181 listed, 23 live, median AED 1,342, which makes it the second-cheapest Hermès name after the Fourre-Tout.
In-The-Loop
A 2019 design built around a strap that loops through a cut-out in the flap, in 18 and 23 cm, Clémence or Swift. Small numbers but the strongest retention of any model with more than ten listings: 24 listed, 7 live, median AED 18,250 and 92% of retail.
Jige
The Jige is the house clutch, a flat envelope with a leather "H" closure, in 23 (PM) and 29 (GM), named with Jean-Louis Dumas's initials pronounced in French. Swift is the usual leather (29 of 49 listings). 49 listed, 2 live, median AED 7,811.
Jypsière
Jean Paul Gaultier's 2008 crossbody, a Kelly flap and turnlock on a slouchy body with a long strap, in 28, 31, 34 and 37 cm. 39 listed on Libas Collective, 1 live, median AED 20,285, retention 64%.
Kelly
The Kelly began life as the Sac à Dépêches in the 1930s, a smaller version of the HAC, and became the Kelly in 1977 after Grace Kelly was photographed with one in 1956. One top handle, a flap, two straps with a turnlock and padlock, and a detachable shoulder strap. Sizes are 15 (Micro), 20 (Mini Kelly II), 25, 28, 32, 35 and 40; Sellier is the structured construction, Retourne the soft one. The name has become a family of its own: the Kelly Pochette clutch (9 listed, median AED 77,206, 86% retention), the Kelly Danse (a belt or shoulder bag, 3 listed), the Kelly Ado backpack (2 listed), the Kelly Dépêches briefcase (12 listed, median AED 18,206), the Kelly To Go wallet on a strap (27 listed, median AED 26,527), the So Kelly bucket bag of 2008 (10 listed, median AED 28,954), the Kelly Élan east-west evening bag (3 listed, median AED 72,514), the Kelly Cut, the Kelly Flat, the Kelly Lakis with its exterior pockets and the Kelly Doll.
On Libas Collective, 424 Kelly bags have been listed and 46 are live. The 32 is by far the most common size (131 listed, median AED 38,935), then the 35 (66, AED 36,752), the 28 (61, AED 52,123) and the 25 (17, AED 74,611). The two Mini Kelly II currently live ask a median of AED 117,792. Togo and Box are the leading leathers; the Box Calf Kelly Sellier 32 is the vintage classic. Family retention is 69%. The leathers in the name
The first word of most listings is the leather, and it changes the price and the feel more than the colour does. Togo is a grained calfskin that holds its shape and resists scratches, the leather on 53% of our Birkins. Clémence is heavier and slouchier, the default on the Evelyne, Picotin and Lindy. Epsom is embossed and stiff, the lightest and the easiest to care for, favoured on the Constance and the Kelly Sellier. Swift is smooth and saturates colour, used on small pieces like the Mini Lindy, the Jige and the Kelly Pochette. Box is the glossy vintage leather of the Kelly Sellier. Chèvre (goat) is light and scratch-resistant. Evercolor is a fine-grained calf used on the Roulis and Toolbox. Toile is the canvas body of the Herbag, Garden Party and the beach line, and the reason those names hold less of their retail price.
Which Hermès bag name should you buy pre-owned?
Three patterns in our data decide it. First, availability: the Birkin, Kelly, Herbag, Evelyne and Picotin account for 1,976 of the 3,705 bags we have listed, so those are the names you can be choosy about on size, leather and colour. Second, the size ladder: on the Birkin, Kelly and Lindy the smallest size asks the most, because Hermès allocates fewer of them. A 35 Birkin or a 32 Kelly is the best-value way to own the name. Third, retention: canvas and vintage names (Herbag 56%, Sac à Dépêches 45%, Médor 46%) sit well below retail while the Constance, Kelly Pochette and In-The-Loop sit above 79%. If you want the lowest entry price with a leather body, the Aline (median AED 4,954), the Jige (AED 7,811) and the Garden Party 36 (AED 7,254) are the names to search.
Across all 3,705 listings, 98.7% are open to offers, and the condition split is 1,912 "good", 1,700 "very good", 58 "fair" and 34 unworn. Authentication is available at checkout on eligible pieces. You can browse the whole brand on the pre-owned Hermès page.
Frequently asked questions
What are the names of Hermès bags?
The current core range is the Birkin, Kelly, Constance, Lindy, Picotin, Evelyne, Garden Party, Herbag, Bolide, Jypsière, Halzan, Roulis, Verrou, 24/24, In-The-Loop, Geta, Della Cavalleria, Toolbox and Cabasellier, plus clutches such as the Jige, Médor, Kelly Pochette and Égée. Retired names you will see pre-owned include the Trim, Plume, Whitebus, Massai, Marwari, Vespa, Victoria, Steve, Sac à Dépêches and Haut à Courroies.
How many Hermès bag models are there?
Hermès does not publish a count. Our catalogue of 3,705 Hermès bags on Libas Collective contains more than 80 distinct model names, and five of them (Birkin, Kelly, Herbag, Evelyne, Picotin) account for 1,976 listings, more than half.
What is the most popular Hermès bag?
By listings on Libas Collective it is the Birkin (526), followed by the Kelly (424), Herbag (390), Evelyne (330) and Picotin (306). By live stock today the Birkin and Herbag tie at 78, with the Evelyne at 77.
What is the difference between the Birkin and the Kelly?
The Birkin has two handles and no shoulder strap; the Kelly has one handle and a detachable strap. The Kelly's flap closes over the straps, the Birkin's straps sit over the flap. Both come in Sellier and Retourne constructions and share the turnlock, padlock and clochette.
What do Sellier and Retourne mean?
Sellier ("saddler") bags are stitched on the outside and keep a crisp, structured shape. Retourne ("turned") bags are stitched inside-out, so the edges are rounded and the bag slouches. The same model in the same size can be either; Sellier usually asks more.
What do the numbers in Hermès bag names mean?
The number is the width of the base in centimetres: a Birkin 35 is 35 cm wide, a Kelly 28 is 28 cm wide. Models that use PM, MM, GM and TPM instead follow the French for small, medium, large and very small.

What is the Hermès Haut à Courroies?
The 1892 saddle-and-bridle carrier from which the Kelly and Birkin descend. It is taller than a Birkin with longer straps, made in 32 to 50 cm. Twelve have been listed on Libas Collective at a median asking price of AED 50,468.
Where is the stamp on a Hermès bag?
The blind stamp (a letter in a shape that gives the year, with the artisan's marks) is on the back of the right-hand strap on Birkins and Kellys made from around 2015, and inside the bag, pressed into the leather near the lining or under the strap, on older ones. The "HERMÈS PARIS MADE IN FRANCE" heat stamp sits under the flap on the front panel. Our authentication guides for the Birkin and Kelly show both.
How do you pronounce Hermès?
"Air-MEZ": the H is silent and the final s is pronounced, because the grave accent on the è marks the name as French, not Greek. The brand itself and its UAE boutiques use this pronunciation.
Where was the first Hermès store?
Thierry Hermès opened a harness workshop in Paris in 1837; his son Charles-Émile moved the business to 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in 1880, which is still the flagship and the address behind the "Mosaïque au 24" and "24/24" bag names. Hermès' UAE boutiques are in The Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and The Galleria in Abu Dhabi.
Are pre-owned Hermès bags on Libas Collective authenticated?
Authentication is available at checkout on eligible pieces for a fee, with the report delivered under Order Summary before the bag ships. Listings from our trusted-seller partners are authenticated at source and covered by the lifetime authenticity guarantee in our Terms, section 16(b).
