Which Hermès Bag Holds Its Value? 760 Bags Measured (2026)

Which Hermès bag holds its value — UAE
The Birkin holds most at 72% of retail — but an Evelyne holds its value as well as a Kelly costing four times as much. Measured across 760 pre-owned Hermès bags.

Quick answer: Across 760 pre-owned Hermès bags on the UAE market where we hold both the asking price and the original retail price, the Birkin holds most at a median 72% of retail. The surprise is underneath it: the Evelyne holds its value just as well as the Kelly despite costing roughly a quarter as much new. And the Herbag, at 53%, holds value worse than the average designer bag of any brand.

Bar chart of median asking price as a share of original retail price for six Hermès bag models: Birkin 72%, Evelyne 70%, Picotin 68%, Kelly 67%, Garden Party 66%, Herbag 53%, against an all-brand market median of 58%

The hierarchy everyone repeats

Ask which Hermès bags are worth buying and you get the same ranking every time. Birkin and Kelly are the investments, the quota bags you cannot simply walk in and buy. Everything else — the Evelyne, the Picotin, the Garden Party, the Herbag — is treated as a nice bag rather than a store of value.

We can test that, because our catalogue records the original retail price alongside the current asking price on a large share of listings. Pulling every Hermès listing that carries both gives 2,638 items, of which 760 fall into a bag model with enough listings to measure honestly.

What the 760 bags show

Garden Party5366%58–82%AED 10,193
Herbag15553%48–67%AED 14,691

For context, the median across all 17 designer brands we measure is 58% of retail. Five of these six Hermès models sit above that line. One does not.

The Evelyne and the Kelly are level

This is the finding that surprised us most. The Evelyne's median ask is 70% of retail and the Kelly's is 67% — and once you account for sampling, those two figures are indistinguishable. We ran the medians through a bootstrap and the difference between them (3.7 points) has a confidence interval that crosses zero. So the honest claim is not that the Evelyne beats the Kelly. It is that we cannot tell them apart.

That is remarkable, because these are not comparable objects at retail. A Kelly typically starts around AED 62,000 and requires a relationship with a boutique. An Evelyne is roughly AED 16,000 and is far easier to buy. Four times the price, the same value retention.

The explanation is that scarcity and retention are different things. A quota bag is hard to acquire, and that difficulty is what produces the premium and the mythology around it. But retention measures something else: how well the resale price tracks what the piece originally cost. A leather Evelyne is simple, durable, made continuously in the same silhouette, and steadily in demand — which is exactly the recipe for a stable resale price, with or without a waiting list.

The Herbag is the one to think twice about

At a median 53% of retail, the Herbag is the only Hermès model in our data that holds value worse than the average designer bag of any brand. The gap to the Kelly is roughly 14 points and is statistically solid, not noise.

It is not hard to see why. The Herbag's body is canvas rather than full leather, it is produced in seasonal colourways that date it, and it has no acquisition friction at all. Everything that makes it approachable also makes it ordinary on the resale market.

That is not an argument against owning one. It is an argument for buying it because you want to carry it, not because you expect it to hold its price.

What about "Birkins sell above retail"?

The Birkin does top our table, at 72%. It is still 72% of retail, not above it. The pieces that genuinely trade above their original price are a narrow slice — exotic skins, rare hardware, discontinued colours, sizes that were scarce to begin with — and they are a minority of listings, not the typical Birkin.

There is also a mechanical reason resale can appear to "appreciate" that has nothing to do with the bag: Hermès raises its own retail prices regularly. A bag bought five years ago may ask more than its original ticket simply because the current equivalent costs considerably more.

How to read these numbers before you buy

Three practical takeaways from the table:

  • Paying more does not buy better retention. Across these six models, the correlation between retail price and how well a model holds value is weak. The Garden Party at AED 10,193 sits within a point of the Kelly at AED 61,712.
  • The spread within a model is wider than the gap between models. The middle half of Picotins ranges from 59% to 83% of retail. Condition, leather, size and colour move a specific bag more than its name does.
  • Retention is not the same as value. A bag you carry weekly for ten years has earned its keep at any resale figure. Retention only matters if you intend to sell.

If you want to check a specific piece rather than a model average, our free resale value checker gives the current asking range for comparable listings, and tells you when there isn't enough data to answer.

How we measured this, and what it doesn't cover

We took every Hermès listing in the catalogue carrying both an asking price and a recorded original retail price (2,638 items), classified them by model from the listing name, and kept the six models with at least 30 listings each — 760 bags in total. Non-bag items such as scarves, jewellery, belts and shoes were excluded. The ratio is the buyer-facing asking price including fees, divided by the item's own recorded retail price converted to dirhams.

Three limits worth stating plainly. These are asking prices, not transaction prices — they show what the market asks, not what every buyer pays. Nearly all listings carrying a retail price come from one supplier's sourcing, so this is one large sample of the UAE market rather than a census of it. And models with thin samples — the Constance, Lindy, Bolide and Jypsière among them — were left out rather than published at n=6, which is the honest thing to do even though the Constance in particular looked interesting.

The brand-level version of this analysis, covering 17 designer houses, is in our UAE pre-owned luxury price index.

Frequently asked questions

Which Hermès bag holds its value best?

The Birkin, at a median asking price of 72% of its original retail price across 172 listings. The Evelyne follows at 70% and the Picotin at 68%. All three sit above the 58% median for designer bags generally.

Does an Evelyne hold its value as well as a Kelly?

On our data, yes. The Evelyne's median ask is 70% of retail and the Kelly's is 67%, and the difference is within the margin of sampling error — the two are statistically indistinguishable. The Evelyne costs roughly a quarter as much at retail.

Do Hermès Birkins really sell for more than retail?

Some do, but they are the exception rather than the rule. The median Birkin listing asks 72% of its original retail price. Pieces that ask above retail tend to be exotic skins, rare hardware or discontinued specifications. Hermès also raises its retail prices over time, which can make an older bag's asking price look like appreciation when it is partly price inflation on the new equivalent.

Why does the Herbag hold value less well than other Hermès bags?

At 53% of retail it is the weakest model we measured, roughly 14 points below the Kelly. Its canvas body, seasonal colourways and ready availability all work against resale demand, in contrast to the continuously-produced leather models.

Is a Hermès bag a good investment?

Measured honestly, a Hermès bag is a slow-depreciating asset rather than an appreciating one. The typical piece asks between two-thirds and three-quarters of its original price on the resale market. That is unusually strong for fashion, but it is not the same as making money.

Are these the prices Hermès bags actually sell for?

No — these are asking prices on live and recently-sold listings. Asking prices are what can be measured consistently at scale. Final sale prices after negotiation are typically at or slightly below the asking price.

Does this apply outside the UAE?

The listings are from the UAE market, where buyers come from across the GCC and beyond. The relative ranking of models is likely to travel; the absolute percentages may differ in markets with different retail pricing and duty structures.
